My practice is greatly influenced by Mark Wallinger’s Diana and his ability
to reverse the voyeur/subject roles. I experiment with photography and video to explore the idea of controlled voyeurism and create manipulated scenarios, as in Through the Lid, where I combined found objects with the camera lens. In my series, Peep, I deal with the notion of controlled voyeurism by putting myself in a vulnerable position in front of a slightly hidden camera and allowing it to record me whilst in the bath. This contrasts the idea of voyeurism as I am able to face away from the camera and cover parts of my body that I do not wish to reveal, therefore I am controlling what is seen by the viewer. I also incorporate the role of social media sites into my work, exploring how a photograph can be modified- edited, cropped, filtered etc before it is uploaded online for anyone else to see. This is done in order to re-create the image and make it appear aesthetically pleasing or give it another narrative. Choosing What Tom Sees explains this gesture of being selective with the image shows how the subject is controlling what the viewer sees. |
