SOPHIE JONES
Artist Sophie, uses pornography as a source to create one off paintings. Her concerns lie with identity and sexuality. She also works with issues such as personal experiences of sex life, desires, and passions. What she wants to communicate with her paintings are the preconceptions and aversions that still exist towards homosexuality. By de-contextualising porns socially recognised habitat, and positioning porn into a public domain; Sophie alters the way in which porn is viewed, for the spectator somewhat becomes an unwilling participant. “For me, using porn excites me, for sometimes people seem petrified and embarrassed by it, I use these emotions to fuel the graphicness of my paintings for I feel every piece of artwork I make is supposed to be a social experiment. I feel with my work viewers either feel a sense liberation, or un-comfortableness; either way I like to think that those feelings make my work memorable. |
